The First Disposable Vapes

If you have been vaping for a decade or more, you probably remember the first generation of disposable vapes. Blu and NJOY had two of the more successful products of that era. They adopted a convenient and narrow form factor. Their focus was on smaller puffs of high potency e-juice rather than booming clouds of lower nicotine vape juice. These same preferences hold true for many adult vapers today.  

Early Disposable E-Cig Problems

There has always been great demand for slender, draw activated devices. Design a good one and it will sell.  But the early disposable e-cigarettes were plagued by some key limitations and the biggest was the chemical properties of freebase nicotine. 

The issue was not nicotine strength. There is no reason you cannot add the same quantity of nic salts or freebase nicotine to an e-liquid. The Blu had a strength of 48mg. This is not far behind the standard 50mg found in today’s disposables. The issue was a lack of compelling flavors, weak vapor production and the discernible harshness created by high concentrations of freebase nicotine.

Refillable devices advanced swiftly in the years between 2011 and 2015. 2015 was the year nicotine salts hit the market and changed everything. For the first time, small vape devices with low wattage outputs were on an even playing field.

E-Liquid Flavors

Modern disposables deliver great performance because of nic salts but they would be much less popular if limited to tobacco flavors.

Adult vapers prefer sweet and delightful fruit flavored vapes over tobacco e-juices. It makes sense. Nicotine Salts versus Freebase Nicotine

Nicotine salts are made by adding benzoic acid to freebase nicotine. According to Juul, it also crosses the blood brain barrier more readily. More discernible is the lower pH which allows nic salts to be added in higher potencies without making the vapor too harsh for a human to tolerate. 

Freebase nicotine is perfect for 0 to 6mg. It is pretty good at 12mg. There are even vapers, specifically the minority who prefer tobacco flavors and high-PG juices, who think throat hit and chest burn add authenticity to the vaping experience.

This “feature” can be enjoyed at 12, 18, 24 and 36mg strength. But once you hit 50mg with freebase nicotine, you are approaching the limit of human tolerance. Unless the vapor production is miniscule, which was the approach of Blu and others in the early days of vaping. 

Salt nicotine juices are usually sold in strengths between 24 and 50mg. The lower option allows vapers to cut nicotine intake, but this is still a high nic level. Unfortunately, most disposable vapes are only available in a single nicotine strength, generally 50mg/5 percent nicotine by volume. 

Juul Vape Pod Kit

Juul changed everything when they arrived on the scene with their nic salt filled vape pods. Their product featured higher nicotine concentrations, smoother performance, and better flavor options than their brick-and-mortar rivals manufactured by Legacy Nicotine companies and their subsidiaries.

The vape pod loaded with nic salts won in the marketplace of ideas. MyBlu and Vuse hit the market with rival products. Altria then purchased a big percentage of Juul, bringing the brick and mortar vape market back under the control of the tobacco industry. 

Teen Vaping Epidemic

This streak of dominance had a huge cost to adult vapers in the long term. While the evidence behind Juul marketing to minors is pretty dodgy, there is no doubt that their discrete product did prove popular with underage vapers. Particularly, the mint flavor. You wouldn’t know that based on the antics of politicians and news coverage. In 2018, it was impossible to turn on the TV without finding politicians posturing and posing by bottles of max-VG juices. This style of e-liquid is used in vape mods, a design that had no part in what was framed as the teen vaping epidemic.

Vape mods are loud, thirsty, large and generate vapor with an identifiable odor. You can hear the trademark snap and gurgle of a vape mod through a wall. Vape mods are not a device that a minor is going to be able to sneak puffs of in the commode.

A number of laws were passed in response to this uptick, which then FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb laid entirely at Juul’s feet. The most effective law was Tobacco-21. The CDC Tobacco Youth Survey found that most underage vapers were acquiring their vapes from peers under the age of 21. The appeal of flavors was not ranked as one of the top three reasons minors vape.

Since the passage of Tobacco-21, rates of teen use have plummeted dramatically. They have plummeted to the point where anti-vaping crusaders in Congress are still citing the 2018 Youth Tobacco Survey because more up to date surveys have found a notable drop in underage use.
